Naplavka

Naplavka, Praha, Czech Republic

I’ve been trying to go to the Náplavka Farmers Market/Náplavka Farmářské Tržiště but hunger gets in the way and we’re off to a lazy brunch before I can even remember it’s happening. Finally, one sunny autumn Saturday I remembered while brunching at Maso a Kobliha and off we went. But a few interesting things caught our attention between the restaurant and our tram stop.

Flustered by all of the excitement, we got on the wrong tram! It was going the right direction but diverted away so, we had to backtrack. Well worth it after seeing this abandoned Praha – Vyšehrad building.

The market was nearly over when we arrived. There were still a few vendors up and a flea market on a ship which was really cool to shop atop of. We did manage to try a few drinks:

  • Burçak – A young, fermented Moravian wine only available in September which will continually ferment in your stomach, liver and minds. It tasted like a delicious carbonated and slightly fermented, fresh grape juice. I didn’t drink enough to warrant a crazy afternoon like this writer witnessed, but there’s always next time and I should try it in Moravia.
  • Cannabis Cider – An apple cider from enhanced with the dried leaves and flowers of hemp, not THC (sorry stoners). It was crisp and not as sweet as you would expect from other ciders.

Then, we took our drinks to see what was happening on the other side of the Vlataska river. We had three options to get there: water taxi, the regular old bridge (Palackého most) you see everywhere in Prague or this cool industrial steel bridge. I asked Jon to pick our route and of course, he chose the steel bridge (Železniční most), which I instantly regretted as soon as a fast train zipped by rattling all of us who tried to cross over. Except they weren’t carrying a cup of booze while navigating between creaky steps and my overwhelming fear of heights.

After crossing back to the other side via Palackého most (the safe bridge), we spotted more people and swans enjoying a relaxing Saturday afternoon next to the Vltava River and everyone’s (?) favorite boozing pirate, Captain Morgan. They are trying very hard to convince everyone to drink more rum but the people on the promotional boat were mainly sticking it to the captain and drinking beer. Arrrrgh!

But you can’t miss this Captain Morgan Boat, it’s practically asking you to drink some rum and adopt a parrot.

We debated getting on the boat but beautiful swans were gliding past us and there’s no amount of rum I’d pass to sit along the river and watch them co-mingle with some ducks. We grabbed some beers from a little outdoor bar and plopped our arses down on the cold concrete. Then this happened:

I wish I yelled at him.

We left soon after and started to walk the long way home.
