All of the Ways to Say and Have A Merry Christmas

I’m not a religious person, but I’ve been fortunate to witness how the Christmas season is celebrated in Portugal, Spain, and Taiwan this past month. The majority of Portugal and Spain’s population are Catholic so Christmas decorations are the norm along with markets, sales and tree lighting ceremonies to kick of the season.

It’s about 80°F or 27°C out here in Taipei.

But here in Taiwan, I was pleasantly surprised to see variations of Christmas trees, lights, decorations and European-style markets when the top 3 religious faiths are Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. But Taiwan is a highly diverse and tolerant society where Christianity is practiced by some, so it was nice to see all faiths were recognized or maybe the idea of Christmas came from the west or Hollywood. I don’t know it’s origin. Either way, it’s interesting to be a part of something new and different.

Then, someone on my women’s travel group asked how to say, “Merry Christmas” in our native tongues which produced a lot of responses. This piqued my interest since I never knew many of these countries celebrate or acknowledge Christmas one way or another!
