On Sunday, we brunched twice!
First, we went to BIO|OKO‘s Filmbrunch to see the indie film, American Honey starring Sasha Lane and Shia LaBeof. You can feel the tragic American cycle of the underprivileged youth who are brought up in the system or have fallen out of it with no one to fall back on. It was a cinematic beauty with an interesting storyline. A film to consider watching.
We watched the film while sitting in mismatched retro chairs and noshed on a celery root salad & a slice of cold potato pie. It wasn’t the tastiest brunch, but quite the opposite. They had a full bar and other food to choose from like a Bacon Maple cupcake but it didn’t look as appetizing as it first appeared in the early 2000s. I should have stuck to popcorn.
Afterward, we headed across the street to Bistro 8 for a breakfast salad and kombucha, bottled in-house! Jon’s breakfast salad (top) was topped with eggs, over easy and Czech bacon – this kind of bacon is not your typical American fatty bacon which crinkles and crisps. My breakfast salad (bottom) was topped with beets, goat cheese and poached eggs. Very satisfying and not riddled with ridiculous amounts of breakfast potato-type fillers. It’s always delicious here.
Next time, we know to keep film watching and brunch eating as two separate events.
